MP Linda Burney stated Sorry Business is of deepest cultural importance to First Nations communities.
But the collapse of the Youpla Group funeral fund earlier this year has had a significant impact on many First Nations people.
Many have been unable to bury their loved ones in line with traditional mourning practices.
The company breached its moral responsibility, it breached its cultural responsibility and has breached the trust of thousands and thousands of First Nations people.
That’s why we’ve announced an interim fund that intends to cover people who held policies as of 1 April 2020, so that their families can get on with Sorry Business. It will run until 30 November 2023.
There’s more to be done, and I’ll be working hard with my colleagues to find a permanent solution for those victims of Youpla’s collapse.
But this is an important first step to give those First Nations families the support they deserve.
