🌼 Seeing Wildflowers: Cultivating Joy Through Perspective

Updated: Jul 21

Some people could be given an entire field of roses and only see the thorns in it. Others could be given a single weed and only see the wildflower in it."— Amy Weatherly

There’s something quietly profound in this quote. It reminds us that joy isn’t something we stumble upon by accident—it’s something we cultivate, moment by moment, through the lens we choose to look through.

In life, we’re all handed a mix of roses and weeds. Some days feel like blooming gardens, others like tangled patches of thorns. But what truly defines our experience isn’t the landscape itself—it’s how we choose to see it.

Some people focus only on the hardships, the discomfort, the things that go wrong. They see the thorns in every rose, the flaws in every moment. Others, however, find beauty in the smallest things. They see wildflowers in weeds, hope in uncertainty, and light in the cracks.

This shift in perception is powerful. It doesn’t mean ignoring pain or pretending everything is perfect. It means choosing to notice the good that exists alongside the hard. It’s about training our hearts to recognize beauty, even when it’s subtle or hidden.

As Stephen R. Covey once said:"To change ourselves effectively, we first had to change our perceptions."

And Camille Pissarro beautifully observed:"Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing."

That’s where gratitude comes in.

Gratitude is the bridge between perspective and joy. It’s the practice of seeing the good—not just when it’s obvious, but especially when it’s not. It’s the quiet decision to say, “Even here, even now, there is something worth appreciating.”

Melody Beattie reminds us:"It’s so easy to look around and notice what’s wrong. It takes practice to see what’s right."

When we make gratitude a habit, we begin to see the world differently. We stop waiting for happiness to arrive and start creating it ourselves. We become people who find wildflowers in weeds, who see possibility in challenge, and who carry joy not because life is easy, but because we’ve learned to look for it.

So today, pause. Take a breath. Look around.

Joy is closer than you think. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of seeing it.

As I am walking in my path I agree with the statement from Stephen Covey: To change ourselves effectively, we first have to change our perceptions.
